Who Are The Young Farmers Of 'Generation Organic'? : The Salt

They represent a new breed of farmer. Very few of them grew up on farms. Most of them went to college. And now, they want to grow vegetables, or feed pigs.

We are making plans to get closer to our dream of farming. :) 

haha  guuuuuess what i spent all day doing??? finding free gardening materials on craigslist, creating a crop rotation schedule for the greenhouse i’m building, finally settling upon the cheapest, most economical fit (for a 24’x60’ stretch i’m only wasting about 7 sq. ft!!! and i’m sure i’ll find a use for it through some impromptu cold frames or something) for 6mm greenhouse plastic given the free materials (pvc, metal rail, 2x4’s, 2x6’s, 3/4” bolt/nuts, clamps) i’ve saved from the waste loop at the warehouse with the help of my co-workers- and buying that plastic, finding 55-gallon drums on craigslist for 1/5th the normal asking price so that i can start rain-water catchment (we have no water supply currently, as the neighbor turned his well off) and learning how to make the very best DIY catchment system (one that can work through a Chicago winter, possibly), planning crop rotations/seed selection for my low tunnels, applied for a production internship at midwest groundcovers, researched the best books on how to start a backyard nursery, etc.

AND I’M STILL WORKING ON A BACHELOR’S I’M NEVER GONNA USE.
