goals for 2012, on and off the farm
goals for 2012, on and off the farm
no refrigeration: zeer pot for perishables, unwashed eggs (good for up to 5 weeks unrefrigerated), smoking meats
no mosquitoes anywhere, no codling moths in orchard: bat houses
permanent (mobile) residence: DIY Sioux-style 18-foot diameter Tipi (although I may have my mother stitch the canvas and lining; not my forte)
raw milk, weed control, best friends: nubian goats
eggs, slug control: khaki campbell ducks
meat, deer grazing control, furs, bone tools: DIY osage orange bow hunting
bulk of food: organic garden, mushroom cultivation, dumpster diving, canning, high tunnel for winter production (done), seed saving, maybe a root cellar? (high hopes)
soil building/invasive removal: gathering manure/food scraps from willing donors (lots of equestrian centers nearby), hugelkultur of buckthorn, greenmanure/covercrops
water (non-potable): rainwater catchment, creek
winter water: ?
drinking water: ? (we have a well but i’d prefer not to rely on it)
internet: public library
electricity: solar arrangement, wind power in winter? fuck i don’t know, i don’t want to deal with this
composting toilet: bucket in a box with a traditional toilet seat on it and plenty of carbonaceous materials stored
starch: try to forage a considerable amount of amaranth/goosefoot, wapato, burdock, acorns, cattail rhizomes. plant lots of potatoes. otherwise bitch out and buy grains?
saving grace: begin 10-acre food forest- namely black walnut seed stratification for black walnut retirement fund
lawn-ish clearings: white pine needle droppings acidifying soil, scythe
medicine: wildcrafting
hygiene: wildcrafting
income: offer services as bike mechanic, get a plant propagation/nursery job, frame 5 acre organic farm plans; legitimately assess current and potential recurring costs (gahhh! new greenhouse plastic in just four years, fuck!)
*inoculate all plantings with ~150ml each of established, healthy forest soil (a la Morton Aboretum/local preserves): “If the trees are paying so much attention to the soil microbes, why aren’t we? We should not pant trees. We should plant ecologies. This means polycultures, not only of plants, but also of all the living elements of a healthy soil food web.” - Dave Jacke
this is why i don’t have any friends. i cannot be stopped.
